Below gives you a brief outline of what to do if your vehicle breaks down on the Motorway
GET TO SAFETY - If your vehicle suffers a mechanical failure do not panic, safely make your way to the hard shoulder and activate your hazard lights. If you are on a motorway that does not have a hard shoulder, make your way to the nearest Emergency Refuge Area.
EXIT VEHICLE - Ensure that you and everybody safely exit the vehicle to the left (passenger side). If you have any warning equipment in your vehicle (Triangles, Hi-Vis vests etc.) use them, stand behind a crash barrier, if there is not one available stand as far away from the moving traffic as possible. Although this may sound unethical for some and we understand as all of us have pets, do not attempt to remove them from the vehicle.
USE A PHONE - It is always advisable to alert Highways England (0300 123 5000) the control room will then deploy any CCTV in the area and also reduce the speed limits in your area, a patrol officer may also attend to your location and provide additional safety for you. After this call us, motorway breakdowns will always take priority over anything else and we will immediately dispatch a recovery vehicle to you.
